26. Berners in the Snow by Beth Hickman
This print says what all of us already know - Berners LOVE snow! Three Berners are enjoying a cold day in this print by artist, Beth
Hickman. This piece will surely conjure up thoughts of your own Berners each time that you view it!
27. Jennifer McNulty Berner Painting
Jennifer McNulty has quite a talent for capturing the essence of a Berner puppy in this phenominal piece. The vivid greens accentuate
the Berner colors and this puppy seems to say that he is growing rapidly into a magnificent adult Berner right before your eyes!
Gale Werth is a quiet and modest person, who would probably not be comfortable with any publicity. And I apologize to her in advance
for trying to give people who are new to the breed a bit of forgotten history.
Gale has probably had a tremendous impact to the dogs we see today, but with only a few notable dogs of her own. But go back in your
pedigrees, many of you will find Broken Oaks back there. She got her second Berner, Mon Plaisir's Shady Lady, in 1974, and she got
out of the breed before 1990.
Among her many other accomplishments she handled her girl Arjana to a HIT at the National Specialty, two back to back Winners Dogs
with her boy Deiter at the National, and two years later took a Best in Specialty Show with that same boy. The following year she
showed her girl I-Ching to a Best of Opposite Sex from the classes (and didn't take Best of Winners either, it must have been a rather
remarkable specialty that year). But the titles at the Specialty don't tell the tale. One of the bitches from Gale's "B" litter went
on to be the foundation bitch for the Dallybecks line. Her dogs figured prominently in a number of lines that are familiar to all
of us today. She is no longer breeding Bernese, but she had an eye for a good dog!
I have to wonder if her artistic talents didn't play a very large role in her eye for selecting dogs. You have to understand that
she didn't have a lot of dogs, didn't co-own with a number of other people, but instead kept and used the best she had. Not many people
have that sort of skill. But her artwork is what fascinates me most. The BMDCA was asked to provide a piece of art representative
of the breed to the AKC Dog Museum, and they selected one of Gale Werth's incomparable carvings - simple little wood carvings that
she did, Berners in various functions. But they have been described as the most anatomically correct Berner art that you'll ever see.
Gale was lucky, she lived in an area with some master woodcarvers from Germany. She took a class with them, and enjoyed spending time
with the elderly carvers. They were a bit nuts, because they were bird carvers – and of course every single feather had to be just
perfect. Gale didn't even try, she stuck with what she knew, and learned to carve Berners. And oh, what Berners! Jumping a high jump,
pulling a cart, doing agility, she showed these beautifully detailed dogs in perfectly scaled settings. She did a limited number of
wood carvings, all of which she has donated to be used as fundraisers. Only a few have been in fundraisers so far, each unique, and
each a fantastic work of art - by someone who bred, showed, and worked with her dogs. Although there are no Bernese Mountain Dogs
at Broken Oaks kennels these days, their memory is retained through her carvings, true collector pieces.
